Everything You Need to Know About Decal Grips for Guns

Decal grips have become an increasingly popular accessory among firearm enthusiasts, offering a practical solution for enhancing grip and control. These grips are typically adhesive-backed, textured overlays designed to improve handling by providing a better grip on the firearm. Whether you're a seasoned shooter or a beginner, decal grips for guns can significantly impact your shooting experience.

Uses of Decal Grips

Decal grips serve multiple purposes, catering to various needs and preferences:

Enhanced Grip: The primary function of decal grips is to provide a better grip on the firearm, especially when sweat, rain, or other environmental factors might cause the gun to slip from your hands.

Recoil Management: By offering a more secure hold, decal grips can help reduce felt recoil, making it easier to manage rapid-fire situations.

Benefits of Decal Grips

Improved Safety: having a firm positive hold of your firearm is paramount when it comes to safety, and is one of the most important, fundamental keys to safe and effective shooting. We know that a better grip on your gun makes it safer to shoot and can decrease the chances of accidental discharges and injury.

Improved Accuracy: A better grip leads to improved control, which can enhance your shooting accuracy. This is particularly important in high-stress situations where precision matters.

Non-Permanent Solution: Unlike stippling or other permanent modifications, decal grips can be easily removed without damaging the firearm, allowing you to revert to the original grip if needed.

Installation of Decal Grips

Installing decal grips is a straightforward process that can be done at home with minimal tools. Here's a step-by-step guide:

  1. Remove the magazine and all ammunition and ensure the firearm is completely unloaded before proceeding with the installation.

  2. Make sure all outer surfaces of the unloaded firearm are clean and free of oil or grease.

  3. Before removing the backing paper from the grip kit, hold each piece up to the firearm to see where it will go and how it aligns.

  4. Start with the largest of the two pieces that will go onto the grip area of the handgun. Peel the decal off of the backing paper and apply it to the gun’s grip. Line it up around the mag release and the bottom edge of the frame. Then wrap the rest; aligning them with the edges and contours of the firearm. Try to avoid excessive touching of the adhesive side of the decal grip.

  5. Repeat step 5 for the rest of the grip kit. You can peel back up and re-align if need be.

  6. Use a hair dryer or heat gun to heat the grip, while pressing down all the edges. This will soften the adhesive and help it to mold into the textures of the gun surface. In colder temperatures longer and closer usage of hair dryers may be necessary.

  7. Continue to press down all the edges and into all the contours until the gun cools to near room temperature. Then wrap rubber bands or a small ace bandage around the frame to hold all the edges and flaps down while the adhesive cures.
